Our Staff
Adam Jones
Adam (he/him) joined JCWI in May 2022. He is a solicitor and IAAS Level 2 accredited Senior Caseworker. Prior to working in immigration and asylum law, he worked as a legal intern for the Arizona Capital Representation Project, assisting clients on death row in the United States. Adam has a particular interest in immigration cases concerning a person’s mental health and strategic litigation into the link between immigration and the consequences of climate change.
Carolina Largo
Carolina has a Degree in Law, a Diploma in Conflicts Management and a Diploma in Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law obtained in Colombia. She has over 6 years of experience and since arriving in London in 2019 has been working with migrants, asylum seekers and refugees in different areas. She volunteered at the HMC providing support to migrants on immigration issues, making legal referrals and assisting with ECF Applications. She is currently the Support Worker at JCWI, assisting the Legal and Policy Team and helping the clients on immigration, housing, welfare benefits and all needs in general.
Enny Choudhury
Enny joined JCWI in January 2017. She qualified as a solicitor in February 2010, and is an IAAS Level 2 accredited caseworker and supervisor. Following qualification, Enny worked as a Judicial Assistant in the Court of Appeal where she developed her interest in immigration and asylum law. Enny is passionate about ensuring that immigration laws are fair and just, and that remedies under the law are accessible to everyone. She is committed to assisting the most vulnerable and marginalized people, including children applicants, and has a particular interest in Legal Aid work. Her areas of expertise include asylum, applications under the Immigration Rules, applications based on Articles 3 and 8 of the ECHR, challenges to deportation, EAA applications and judicial review. Enny conducts advocacy before the First-Tier Tribunal. Enny also provides a weekly telephonic advice line for Unison members in all areas of immigration and asylum law. Enny is committed to social mobility through education; she teaches English GCSE at a Saturday school and mentors children. She enjoys travel and reading.

Janhavi Gosai
Janhavi Gosai is a Trainee Solicitor and IAAS Level 2 Accredited Senior Caseworker and joined JCWI in March 2023. Having prior worked at a legal aid firm, she has worked on a number of cases involving asylum & trafficking matters, deportation and appeals in both the First tier and Upper Tribunal. Before working in the legal sector, Janhavi completed training with the Citizens Advice Bureau and participated in the ‘Write for Rights’ campaign by Amnesty International whilst studying at the University of Law.
Laura Smith
Laura Smith is a solicitor and legal team supervisor at JCWI. She has worked extensively on asylum law and has particular expertise in asylum cases for persecuted political activists. She represented clients in KK and RS (Sur place activities, risk) Sri Lanka (CG) [2021] UKUT 130 (IAC) and DH (Particular Social Group: Mental Health) Afghanistan [2020] UKUT 223 (IAC). In 2021 Laura hosted an open workshop on mental health in asylum cases, with well over 100 delegates in attendance. She joined JCWI in 2019 from Duncan Lewis.
Madhulika Jain
Madhulika joined JCWI in June 2022 as an Accounts Assistant. Prior to this role, she worked at a Lettings Agent handling the accounts for three years. She has a First Class Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and Finance and further City and Guilds Qualifications. She aspires to develop her career in this field by gaining more relevant qualifications and experience.
Mary Atkinson
Mary (she/they) is Campaigns and Networks Managers at JCWI, focusing on supporting the movement to end the Hostile Environment. Prior to this, she worked as a freelance journalist in Colombia, where she also supported destitute Venezuelan migrants. Before moving to Colombia, she worked as a news editor with a focus on migration, volunteered with people in immigration detention and supported various migrants’ rights campaigns in the UK.
Poppy Firmin
Poppy joined the legal team at JCWI in March 2022. She is an OISC Level 2 accredited, and IAAS Level 2 accredited senior caseworker. Poppy has been working in immigration, asylum and public law since 2017, and is committed to helping her clients access justice and fight for their rights in the face of a racist, and unjust immigration system which is not fit for purpose. Poppy has extensive experience working with people with vulnerabilities including victims of torture and trafficking, domestic violence, and those struggling with mental health issues, disability, and destitution. Her areas of expertise include asylum and human rights based immigration applications, fresh claims and appeals, and also judicial review. Prior to entering the legal sector, Poppy was involved with migrant solidarity work and campaigning at a grass roots level.
Ravishaan Rahel Muthiah
Ravishaan Rahel Muthiah (he/him) joined JCWI in June 2022 as Communications Director. Rav led record-breaking Parliamentary election campaigns and winning Deputy Leadership campaigns at the Labour Party. He won campaigns against corporate giants and broke political mobilisation records at Greenpeace UK and Small Axe. He has campaigned and volunteered with migrants’ and refugees’ rights groups and excelled in a Masters in International Law with a focus on international human rights and international refugee law.
Rose Bernstein
Rose (she/her) joined JCWI in November 2021 as a Legal Assistant. She has 10 years’ experience in the advice, support and community sector, and before that worked for 5 years in a variety of roles in the NHS. She has volunteered throughout that time with organisations campaigning for migrant rights and services.
Sadaf Ahmed
Sadaf (she/her) is the Media and Communications Manager at JCWI. She has 20 years experience as a journalist, documentary researcher and communications professional. Her writing has been published in national and international press and she has worked on award-winning documentaries on climate change and deaths in police custody. She has worked as a gender researcher in north Pakistan and as a PR professional with both corporate and not-for-profit clients. Sadaf has recently completed a post-graduate diploma in law from BPP University.
Sairah Javed
Sairah (she/her) joined JCWI in September 2017. She is a qualified solicitor and is an IAAS Level 2 accredited caseworker and supervisor. SSairah has been working in immigration and asylum law for more than fourteen years and is committed to helping vulnerable and marginalised people access justice and fight for their rights. She has extensive experience of working on migrant worker’s rights issues, complex Article 3 and 8 cases with a special interest in indefinite leave outside the rules and adult dependent relative applications. She currently works on JCWI’s workers rights campaign ‘work it out’ and advises Unison members on their immigration problems as part of the Unison advice line. Her areas of expertise include asylum, applications under the Immigration Rules, challenges to deportation, EAA applications, entry clearance applications and judicial review. Sairah conducts advocacy before the First-Tier and Upper Tribunal regularly. She speaks Urdu and Punjabi fluently. Her reported cases are:

Sarker Shams Bin Sharif
Shams (he/him) joined JCWI in March 2023, to help reach and engage more people digitally and help keep our supporters engaged. You can reach him at support@jcwi.org.uk. Before joining JCWI, Shams completed a masters in International Liaison and Communication(Currently called International Communication, Advocacy and Liaison) from University of Westminster. Prior to that, he worked in communications and digital engagement, fundraising, volunteering for a range of national and international charities, including Campaign For Tobacco Free Kids, Migrants Voice, Greenpeace, Save Sundarbans From Oilspill, Green Circle Alliance. He is the co-founder of 12 Vaja that works to ensure the rights of grassroots trans and non-binary people in Bangladesh.

Tanmeet Singh
Tanmeet (he/him) joined JCWI in November 2021 as a Paralegal. By way of background, he is a qualified Advocate in India with over 5 years of practice experience. He recently graduated with an LLM in Immigration Law with a focus on Asylum and migration from Queen Mary, University of London. His interest areas are migration policy, public law and asylum law. He aspires to be a dual-qualified Indian Advocate and Solicitor in England and Wales.
Tony Philip
Tony joined JCWI in 2010 from The Islington Law Centre as a casework intern, and has since risen to become our Operations Manager. He also manages JCWI’s training and publications administration. Over the years Tony has accumulated a wealth of experience in all departments and also manages the organisations outside events including the AGMs. Up until Covid-19 in 2021 Tony had an increased number of responsibilities including property redeployment planning, and IT management. Tony was also key in navigating the organisation through lockdown, organising hybrid working provisions and the relocation to our new offices. In his spare time Tony sits on the committee board of Islington Residents Association, supporting residents with issues between landlord and tenant. Tony brings a wealth of experience and skills to the organisation and is a vastly talented individual.
