Work It Out
In our hospitals, classrooms, retail and hospitality industries; through this pandemic, migrant workers have helped to ensure that none of us are left behind. As we recover from this pandemic, we must make sure we do not leave them behind.
Work It Out is a campaign for migrant workers’ rights, and calls for:
- Everyone to have the right to work, regardless of what papers they hold. Repeal the criminal offence of ‘illegal working’ and end ‘right to work’ employer checks.
- Prioritising decent conditions over immigration enforcement. Establish a firewall between labour inspectors and immigration enforcement and enforce minimum working standards more rigorously.
- Ending the cycle that puts workers at the mercy of exploitative employers, by ensuring all work visas include pathways to permanent settlement within a reasonable timeframe, the ability to change jobs easily and creating routes to regularisation via employment.
- Everyone to be able to access a state safety net in times of difficulty. That means scrapping the ‘no recourse to public funds’ visa conditions and increasing sick pay for all.
How does your immigration status affect how safe you are at work?
Our comic, In The Gaps, tells the stories of migrant workers through the covid crisis.
