Passport Please: The impact of the Right to Rent checks on migrants and ethnic minorities in England, February 2017

Background

“Passport Please: The impact of the Right to Rent checks on migrants and ethnic minorities in England” was published in February 2017. Findings explore the impacts of the Right to Rent scheme, cornerstone policy of the Hostile Environment, and are based on surveys of landlords, letting agents and organisations working with or on behalf of affected groups. The research highlights the harmful impacts of the Right to Rent scheme, which it finds to cause discrimination, making it harder for migrants and British people of colour to rent a home. We propose a number of recommendations based on our findings – most importantly that the Right to Rent scheme must be halted and abandoned in its entirety.
