COP29 “climate justice is migrant justice” panel discussion

Adam Jones, the legal lead on JCWI’s Climate Justice is Migrant Justice Project, joined a panel of experts to speak during COP 29 on climate-related displacement.

The panel discussion – followed by a Q&A – looked at practical steps to protect those seeking international protection with a climate dimension to their claim.

Climate induced displacement is happening right now and there is a need to dispel this assumption, in all climate related work, that the crisis we are faced with is something that will only severely be felt in the next 20-25 years. People all over the Global South, as well as closer to home, are facing the catastrophic impact of climate change, right now. Urgent action must be taken, and as a migrants rights charity it’s critical that we are a part of it.

Other panellists included:

  • Yumna Kamel, of Earth Refuge and Right to Remain
  • Ama Francis of the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) and Non-Resident Fellow at the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University.
